Orca Ears Inspire Researchers To Build Pea-Sized Underwater Microphones

If you want to make the best equipment to listen to underwater sounds, where should you look? Most people would point you to the sales department of a high-end audio company, but a group of Stanford researchers are looking to Orca whales for their inspiration.

Orca whales have ears that can sense a wide range of frequencies in an environment with wildly fluctuating water pressures. This is much different from a human ear which can only hear limited frequencies under relatively constant air pressure. The current crop of underwater microphones are more like human ears. They record a limited amount of sound and don't perform well under pressure.(inspire)

The team from Stanford hopes to change all that with their Orca-inspired hydrophone. Their microphone has a thin membrane that is 25x thinner than plastic wrap. Small nano-sized holes let water flow freely through the membrane in response to water pressure changes. Lasers and mirrors are used to detect even the slightest change in the membrane and a fiber optic cable carries the data back to the researchers.

Technology in Sport - Cricket Referral System

The day is fast approaching when cricket decides to follow the example of other sports such as tennis and rugby in allowing the use of technology to assist umpires and referees to officiate. This will hopefully reduce the number of errors and incorrect decisions that are made.

In the same way that tennis players have three opportunities to challenge a decision cricket wants to introduce the same kind of referrals. Not everyone thinks the use of technology in sport is a good idea and one of the criticisms levelled against it is that it erodes the integrity and authority of the referees and umpires.

Another argument against using technology in cricket is that it will slow the game down too much. This point does not carry much weight as some decisions are unclear to the umpires on the field. When this happens the decision is sometimes referred to the third umpire who then uses slow motion technology to arrive at the correct decision. Players being able to challenge decisions will just be an extension of this.

Quite often over the course of a test match there will be one or two incorrect decisions made and the body language of players on the wrong end of these decisions clearly demonstrates they believe an injustice has taken place. Television footage also subsequently exposes incorrect umpiring decisions.

The referral system in cricket is designed to reduce only the major errors so with only three challenges per side it will be used sparingly and only when a captain and his players genuinely believe they have a chance of overturning incorrect decisions.

The use of technology in sport has been a success in tennis and rugby and has not had an adverse effect on the authority of match officials so a player referral system in cricket will only lead to better decision making and reduce controversy from umpiring errors.

Cricket World Cup History – Past Winners List

The ICC Cricket World Cup history starts from the year 1975 when the first World Cup was held in England. Eight teams participated in that event. West Indies were the winner of the first Cup. The final match took place between West Indies and Australia in which the Windies won by 18 runs. Japan quake hits US growth

Live Review: Florence & the Machine at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom

Don’t call Florence Welch just another young female singer-songwriter. Don’t call her part of a trend, and certainly don’t call her material “chick music.” See her live, and then call her what she really is: a force of nature, a consummate performer, and someone we’re all going to be hearing about for a long time.

But before we could see Florence & the Machine, there first was Hanni El Khatib. He played an interesting but perhaps wrong-for-the-occasion set, which seemed to be less his fault and more the fault of the booking agent. The fuzzed-out acoustics didn’t do El Khatib any favors, and neither did the constant feedback issuing from his mic (although his deadpanning “That’s annoying, huh?” did win him some fans). His gritty, drum-driven rock (at moments bearing similarities to Jet and The Black Keys) was musically interesting, but it wasn’t exactly what the crowd came hungry for. It would be nice to see El Khatib again sometime in a more appropriate setting.

After the stage was cleared, a translucent veil dropped over the stage, behind which lights and movement could be seen as the crew finished setting up and musicians took their places. Every swish of the fabric induced screaming amongst the mostly female crowd. By the time the curtain finally fell, anything was possible.(florence and the machine)

Mononucleosis continues to dog Tigers' Inge

DETROIT —If you’ve met Brandon Inge, or even seen him play once or twice, you probably are well aware that energy is not a problem. The Energizer Bunny’s got nothing on the 34-year-old.

It has been for the last month, though, as the veteran third baseman has struggled with a bout of mononucleosis — the second time he’s had it in his lifetime — robbing him of the ability to ... well, be himself.

Of all the injuries he’s been through in his eight-year career, this one has wiped him out the most.

“It did. I don’t like to admit it much, but this one ... this one kind of beat me up a little bit. This one was different. It’s not fun. Not much I can say about it. It’s definitely not easy. This was one of the harder stints to deal with,” said Inge, who has been on the disabled list since June 1, but started feeling symptoms as far back as the second week of May.

“I’m just glad I can get back now, though.”

First, he’ll get back to his roots a bit, taking what’s planned as a six-game rehab stint with Triple-A Toledo, joining the Mud Hens in Louisville tonight to start a four-game series, then riding the bus to Columbus — something he hasn’t done in 11 years — for two more games.

“That’s all right. Don’t forget where you come from,” he laughed.

The road trip will coincide with the Tigers’ six-game Interleague swing out west, where they’ll play the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Glendive -- Taryn Chuter, 23, of Corvallis, won the title of Miss Montana and a chance to represent Montana at the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas next January. Until then, she is Montana's ambassador, speaking to schools and at conferences and special events. Her platform is educate and motivate: preventing childhood obesity.

Chuter won a $5,000 cash scholarship, plus $11,500 in applied scholarships and many prizes, including a silver service tea set that Mitchell Oil Field Service has been giving to Miss Eastern Montana or Miss Montana for 29 years.

First runner-up was Veronika Ohlinger, of Cooke City, singing "Black Velvet." She also won the Spirit and Leadership Award given by the production staff and $2,500.

Chantell Bury, 20, Glendive, was second runner-up, winning $2,000 in a cash scholarship. Bury was voted Miss Congeniality by fellow contestants, and voted most photogenic by Right Impressions, the official photographer for the week. The latest furore is a two-year ban imposed on quick bowler Shoaib Akhtar -- know as "the Rawalpinidi Express" -- and a one-year ban on the golden boy of Pakistani cricket, Mohammad Asif. Both tested positive for a banned steroid. That's just not cricket.

Both cricketers tested positive for the banned steroid nandrolone on October 16, 2006. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) carried out the tests before the team left for India to compete in the Champions Trophy. Both samples of Shoaib and Asif tested positive at the accredited lab in Kuala Lumpur.

What does nandrolone do?

Nandrolone is an anabolic steroid. It's a banned substance that often crops up in drugs tests of athletes from a variety of sports. It provides an extra edge by helping to build muscle, reduce fatigue and improve recovery times from exhaustion. It's not all good, obviously, as it also increases damage to the liver and heart. After the test results were revealed the PCB appointed a three-man doping tribunal headed by Pakistani barrister Shahid Hamid to look into the matter. The panel ruled the pace pair out of all international and domestic cricket for two years.

Hamid told reporters in Lahore on Wednesday, "We gave a full chance to both the pacemen to fight their cases and after a thorough inquiry we feel they failed to prove their innocence. The two players are banned from representing Pakistan in any international match, cannot play in a domestic match under the auspices of the PCB, cannot take any monetary gains and cannot hold any official posts."

Shoaib, who tested negative in 2003 and 2004, plans to appeal against the ruling.
