Spelling bee: Sukanya Roy wins after lengthy spell

It went on and on and on. Five spellers who seemingly had memorized the entire dictionary simply could not be stumped with any word tossed their way. It was getting late, way past bedtime and well beyond the time slot allotted by ESPN.

Finally, after 21 consecutive spellings without a miss, one of them finally flubbed a word. Eventually, the others were gone - having heard the telltale bell of elimination - except for 14-year-old eighth-grader Sukanya Roy of South Abington Township, Pa., who took home the trophy and the more than $40,000 in cash and prizes.

Sukanya's winning word was cymotrichous, which relates to wavy hair. She likes hiking, rock climbing and ice skating and wants to pursue a career in international relations.

She is the fourth consecutive Indian American to win the bee and the ninth in the past 13 years, a run that began when Nupur Lala captured the crown in 1999 and was later featured in the documentary "Spellbound."(scripps spelling bee, national spelling bee )

A three-time competitor at the bee, Sukanya tied for 12th in 2009 and 20th in 2010.

"I went through the dictionary once or twice," she said, "and I guess some of the words really stuck."

Laura Newcombe, 12, of Toronto finished second. She was trying to be the first Canadian to win the bee, but she went out on the word "sorites."

Information And A Little Overview About Cricket

The game known as cricket is not unlike one of the most popular American sports of all time. In fact, people who play cricket often use baseball softball pitching machines to keep their performance up. One cricket player is known to have said he has a batting cage at his home, so cricket players also use batting cages to improve their skills. The game of cricket has been around for centuries and it is popular in plenty of countries around the world as it was brought to different parts of the globe through colonization.

Cricket was first played in England during the the first few years of the 1700s. The game really became popular in England after it officially was known as the national sport. This is the point where the game became more organized when it came to rules and organized teams. By the time England began exploring and colonizing other nations, they were liked to play the sport, so naturally they brought the game with them as the British began to colonize other nations. Because of colonization, the people from England were able to bring the game of cricket to many different parts of the globe. The game is still very popular in pretty much all of the former British colonies.

Each team, is allowed to put on the pitch a total of eleven players. The game is played with two opposing teams and like the American sport, one person pitches or bowls, as it is called in cricket, to the opposition team's hitter. It is similar to the American sport in that the person who bats is attempting to get as many points as possible before getting out. The big difference is that instead of running to the bases, the person who hits the ball is wants to run around something that is called the wicket as many times as possible. The wicket is supposed to stand directly behind the batter, where it is about waist high. There are two ways to play the game in which the game could go on for only a few hours over the course of one day or the game could go on for about five days, again, depending on which way is chosen. For most other parts of the game it is not much different than our "great American pastime" as far as outs are concerned and how the game is actually played.

The game is said to be the second most popular sport in the world only to soccer, which is currently holding the top spot. The better known countries that play the game are India, Australia, Pakistan, and England. Teams from these nations are almost always some of the best in the world.

There are many things that England has contributed to the rest of the globe since they became a huge empire. England had a hand in spreading both soccer and cricket to many nations, which are today, two of the most popular sports on the planet. Cricket is really close to the "great American pastime" when it comes to many of the fundamentals of the game. The history of cricket is extremely rich and the game will most likely continue to grow as cricket is brought to other nations in the future.

L.A. Lakers: Can Ricky Rubio Solve Point Guard Problems?

The NBA is faced with uncertainty as we approach a lockout that can wipe out the season.

With this uncertainty comes the fact that teams might be faced with a stringent salary cap after the lockout ends.

As the Lakers try to build a competitive team year after year, they know that Kobe Bryant is aging and they definitely need to start getting new stars in the near future to continue their NBA dominance.

The Lakers have been weak at the point guard position for years with the legendary, but old Derek Fisher playing the point. There has been speculation that Chris Paul, Deron Williams, and perhaps even Tony Parker would come to the Lakers to give them a fresh look at the point.

However, the Lakers are also interested in bringing in Dwight Howard. Howard will surely ask for plenty of money. Combine Howard's contract with Kobe Bryant's and Pau Gasol's large contracts and the Lakers are all of a sudden near the salary cap.

One break the Lakers do get is that they don't have to pay Phil Jackson eight figures anymore. Although the coach's salary does not show up in the salary cap, it does affect the way a team can spend over the cap. By not having to pay Jackson anymore, the Lakers can be more comfortable going over the cap.

But what if after the lockout, the new CBA has a hard salary cap much like the NHL's system where teams cannot spend over the cap at all?

What options do the Lakers now have for a solid yet affordable point guard?

How about Ricky Rubio?

It sounds like an odd choice. Rubio hasn't played particularly great in his seasons at FC Barcelona. He's never averaged more than 10.2 points per game in the Spanish League and his production has fallen off in the last two seasons. He's barely a 40% shooter and even his assist totals are not that high with only 3.5 per game this season.

But let's be real. Rubio's teammates in Barcelona have no where near the talent level as the Lakers do. They don't have Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum (or Dwight Howard), Ron Artest, and Lamar Odom. If Rubio is on the Lakers, he'll have better players to work with and it'll be a lot easier for him to facilitate. In Barcelona he has to be the guy. Even on the Wolves, he'll have to be the guy.

Powerball winning numbers worth $144 million

The multi-state Powerball Lottery has gone through eight drawings in a row without a winner, so the jackpot for Wednesday has been raised to $144 million.

Six players matched the first five numbers in Saturday’s drawing without the Powerball to win $200,000, none of them from New Jersey, according to usamega.com.

As huge as the odds are against winning the lottery, there are still plenty of winners who delay claiming their prizes, or don’t claim them at all. Cashunclaimed.com reports that New Jersey gives players a year to claim their lottery wins; while tickets are allowed to expire after three or six months in some states. Connecticut lets people file lost ticket claims and investigate what might have happened to their missing ticket.

In Michigan, a proposed law asks lawmakers to prevent anyone receiving welfare from winning major Michigan State Lottery prizes over $600.

Philly.com reported that in the nearby Philadelphia area, only two days remained for someone to claim $200,000 won by a Powerball ticket purchased for the May 26, 2010, drawing at Kelly's News, in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. It matched the first five numbers drawn without the Powerball.

And there were only five days left for a $200,000 winner in the May 29, 2010, Powerball drawing purchased in Avondale.

On cusp of callup, Lawrie gets plunked

TORONTO -- Top prospect Brett Lawrie is "close" to joining the Blue Jays, but an unfortunate injury Tuesday may have thrown the team's plans for him in disarray.

Mere hours after Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos suggested Lawrie was on the cusp of a Major League callup, the blue-chip prospect was hit on the top of the left hand by a pitch in a Triple-A game.

Lawrie left the game immediately and went to a local hospital for X-rays. He gave an update on his Twitter profile, @blawrie13, writing: "At hospital , pls be bruised .. #praying."

Brett Lawrie had a solid spring for the Blue Jays, batting .293 with two homers and six RBIs.
Anthopoulos spoke to reporters at length about several players currently with Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday, including Lawrie -- who appeared to be on the verge of joining the big league club as early as this weekend in Baltimore.

"He's close," Anthopoulos said before Lawrie's injury. "I was hoping he was going to force our hand, and he's starting to. He's very much in the conversation right now. ... At this point, it's just a decision we need to make."

In recent weeks, the Blue Jays have sent several front-office members to Las Vegas to get a look at their blue-chip prospect, including roving infield coach Mike Mordecai and assistant general manager Tony LaCava. Mordecai came back with glowing reviews of Lawrie's improved work in the field.

"The strides he's made defensively have been amazing," Anthopoulos said of Lawrie, who is making a transition from second to third base. "He's really come a long way, and he's looked good."

The primary area the Blue Jays were waiting to see improvement on before calling Lawrie up was his plate discipline. In April, the 21-year-old drew just four walks while striking out 23 times, numbers that raised alarm bells for Anthopoulos and the rest of the Blue Jays brain trust.

Dwyane Wade’s big finish in Game 1 could be his needed spark

Moments before tip-off of his second NBA Finals, Dwyane Wade took some time to gaze at the championship banner hanging high over the east side of the AmericanAirlines Arena.
Just seconds later, he jogged to the opposite baseline to give his mother an extended hug, much to the delight of the cheering crowd around them.
As he prepared for his second Finals appearance against the Dallas Mavericks, and possibly on his way to a second championship, all appeared right in Wade’s world.
And then the game started.
And then he again became the “who is that?” player we saw for most of the Eastern Conference finals.
The player who matched a Heat franchise-high with nine turnovers in that dramatic Game 5 win against Chicago reappeared to start this series. A 1-of-5 shooting performance in the first quarter. Three turnovers in the second quarter.
By the end of the first half of a game that was sloppy on both sides, Wade was the sloppiest. Unfamiliar. Rhythmless.
This was the Wade we saw against the Bulls and assumed he was injured. He spent four days insisting he wasn’t, but he would’ve had to face another round of those same questions if this is how he continued to perform.
Then came the fourth quarter, and apparently with it a reminder that it was the Finals and he was playing the Mavericks and he has quite a history in this exact scenario. He recovered, confidently taking jump shots and making jump shots.
It’s what the Heat is going to need to continue its success in this series after a Game 1 win. More of the self-assured Wade. More of the player who knows he can take Jason Kidd or DeShawn Stevenson or even Shawn Marion at will.
Because these Finals are, already, begging for the Wade of 2006.
