Cricket Equipment – The Path of the Cricket Bat
Some cricket fans would argue that the cricket bat is the most important piece of cricket equipment there is. Without it, runs could not be scored, and the intricate battle between bowler and batter would be non-existent. Because of its major influence on the sport over the years, we thought it proper to take a look at how the cricket bat has evolved.
Modern day cricket fans will likely recall the first mention of a cricket bat in 1624, which back then more resembled a hockey stick. The story details the unlucky fate of a fielder who was fatally struck in the head as a result of a batsman’s attempt to prevent him from catching a ball he’d obviously popped into the air.
Sadly, in the nearly four hundred years since that first fatality, other incidents involving bats have contributed to a healthy share of injuries, and in December 2007, at least one other fatality.
These were primitive times for the sport, when bowlers threw underhand and there were no standards and regulations to define what materials could be used and what the size and dimensions of a cricket bat should be. Today, those dimensions are strictly regulated, with a bat’s blade having to be no more than 108 mm wide and a total length of 970 mm or less.
There is no standard as to how much a bat should weigh, though typically they average between 1.4 and 1.4 kg. Strangers to the sport might think the bats look more like paddles or short oars, but the amount of science, engineering, and craftsmanship involved in modern bat design is extensive.
The establishment of willow as the wood of choice used to make cricket bats began in the early 1800’s, when round-arm bowling became the rule rather than the exception. This is the same wood whose bark powder has been touted throughout history as a remedy for fever. Today, a special hybrid of “cricket-bat willow” is cultivated specifically for producing bats.
Willow is well-known as a strong, lightweight wood that doesn’t rot or splinter easily, outstanding qualities for an instrument used to whack a hard leather ball traveling at more than 90 miles per hour for about 100 meters. Caring for cricket bats is relatively simple, the most important point being that bats cannot be stored in areas where they would dry out, as in car boots or next to a heat source. The best place to store bats is in a cool, dry environment that allows them to “breathe” in a small amount of natural moisture.

The Woodlands set for Monterrey Prepa Tec rematch
THE WOODLANDS — Mark Schmid doesn’t know exactly what The Woodlands football team is preparing for, but he likes how the Highlanders have prepared.
The Woodlands hosts Monterrey Prepa Tec — one of the top varsity football teams in Mexico — to open the season Thursday night at Woodforest Bank Stadium.
The Borregos Salvajes showed different offensive and defensive schemes in a scrimmage last week with Tyler Lee than they had in last year’s 44-7 loss to the Highlanders.
Monterrey Prepa Tec used a spread offense and a 3-4 defense against Lee after running a pro-style offense and 4-3 defense in 2010.
“We’ve prepared for both because we don’t know what we’re going to get until we get it,” Schmid said. “It makes it exciting. We’ll have to make some adjustments on the field. It should be fun.”
World Twenty20 Cricket – What It Is And Where It Happens
For those of us who are not cricket fans if we were to hear the expression 20/20 we would think of 20/20 vision; but for the cricket lover the phrase 20/20 brings up a completely different vision! Often written as Twenty20 cricket this is a relatively recent form of the traditional cricket game and the vision for a Twenty20 cricket fan in 2010 could be spending time in Barbados, St. Lucia, Guyana or St. Kitts to watch the next World 20/20.
So what is Twenty20 cricket and when did it start? In 2003 this form of cricket also referred to as T20 cricket was introduced in the United Kingdom for professional inter-county competitions by the England and Wales Cricket Board. The game involved two teams each of whom has a single innings and they are batting for a maximum of 20 overs.
Twenty20 Cricket matches last around three and a half hours which means that the game is brought more in line with other popular sports. It has been very successful in achieving its aim of creating a lively game which would be attractive to live spectators as well as TV viewers. It has now spread wildly around the cricket world so that on most international tours there will be at least one T20 match played.
The first Twenty20 International Cricket Match took place on 17th February 2005 between Australia and New Zealand. It was approached in a light hearted way with both teams wearing kit similar to that worn in the 1980s plus some players taking it to the next level by sporting 1980’s hairstyles, beards and moustaches; competing in cricket and for the best retro look at the same time! At least the T20 cricket match was won by Australia but as it was so clear that they were the winners the players and umpires started to take things less seriously and Billy Bowden even produced a red card, which are not normally used in cricket.
The inaugural World Twenty20 was played in South Africa in 2007 where India defeated Pakistan by five runs. In 2009 Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets. The third ICC World Twenty20 Cricket Tournament will be held in the West Indies in April and May 2010. It promises the world’s best cricketing talent in this thrilling and fast tournament.
The ICC World Twenty20 Cricket Tournament will take place in Barbados, St. Kitts, St. Lucia and Guyana from 30th April to 16th May 2010. With locations like these even a person who has not followed cricket before could easily be tempted to go on a Twenty20 cricket tour. Barbados has actually opened a museum in November 2009 which is called the Cricket Legends of Barbados Museum and those who go there on these cricket tours can also enjoy some of the best beaches around. In fact the Crane Beach was rated one of the ten best beaches in the world by Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. St. Lucia, another location included in these Twenty20 cricket tours, has an amazing combination of tropical bliss as well as diving, snorkeling, spa pampering and so much more.
Some critics may say that although the T20 cricket format has proved so successful it could be influencing youngsters to being misguided about the game thinking it is all about trying to hit 6s and 4s. However the impact in general has been extremely positive and the Twenty20 game is a more athletic and explosive form of cricket.

Since becoming the first rapper to be signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label, a string of mixtapes, tour stints supporting Drake and Rihanna, and reports that Jay-Z will be featured on the album has only added to the countdown to September 27th, when the mostly self-produced album drops, and last night J. Brad Pitt puts his bachelor pad up for sale
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The star of "Seven" and "Ocean's Eleven" recently listed his four-bedroom Malibu Beach bungalow for $13.75 million.
Brad Pitt reportedly purchased the oceanfront home for about $8 million in 2005, after splitting from ex-wife Jennifer Aniston. He did several extensive renovations on the property, including adding a heated lap pool and tennis court.
He also obtained planning and coastal approval for a proposed second story designed by Chris Sorensen, an architect who specializes in environmentally friendly design.
TV Review: 'The T.O. Show'
The third season of The T.O. Show began Monday at 9:30pm on VH1. You know, the show about football star Terrell Owens? and his two girl best friends and publicists. If you don't, it's okay, this was my first time watching it, too. Because apparently a show can be on for three seasons and you never hear about it. I caught up with the last two seasons during the two minute exposition at the beginning of the episode: Terrell spent years man-whoring it up, failing at romance, and playing football.
This season will be different: he might not play football! He is in the hospital with a torn ACL in his knee and is about to undergo surgery. Kita, one of the friends/publicists, stresses that his knee is "his financial future and football career" and then she prays a lot. When the doctor drugs Terrell up she takes a break from praying and decides to ask Terrell important questions, beginning with, "Am I beautiful?" to which he answers, "No." She then asks, "Do you love me?" And he says, "Slightly." That T.O. is such a jokester.
Post-surgery, the doctor tells Terrell that it will take at least four months to recover fully- but to make him feel better, his ex-girlfriend Kari visits because they are still "friends." Kita asks Kari why she didn't say yes when Terrell proposed, and she responds with, "Cause he was a hot mess." Good answer! Terrell claims there was no process for him to mature so he still acts twenty-five (not thirty-seven). I am not sure what that means... but at least he tried?

Danny Cipriani has reportedly parted ways from Lara Bingle after their recent love trip in Tahiti.
Though the former girlfriend of Australia cricket captain Michael Clarke insisted that she was going to make their relationship work, it has appeared that the Sydney beauty has not heard from Cipriani since their holiday trip in Bora Bora at the end of last month.
“Lara was as surprised about the split as I am sure anyone else might be,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Bingle’s new manager Hermione Underwood, as saying.
“Unfortunately, sometimes things just don’t work out as expected,” she added.
Bingle, 24, and Cipriani, 23, started dating when she was a contestant on Dancing With The Stars.

Therefore to manage up with the harsh international schedule, the much hunted rotation strategy [is there any?] Could be implemented to the satiated. If the top players of the country from a share of say 20-25 are used in different matches judiciously and alternatively, it is hoped that the conundrum of ability and injury could be tackled successfully.

Big Brother line-up: Bercow and Jedward but no Tyson or Sheen
Sally Bercow, the outspoken wife of the Speaker of the Commons, has joined the lineup for the new series of Celebrity Big Brother, which also includes former pop star Kerry Katona and American Pie actor Tara Reid.
Bercow entered the Big Brother house on Thursday as the reality show, axed by Channel 4 last year, returned after an 11-month break on Richard Desmond's Channel 5.
The programme makers promised the "biggest, most colourful and interesting names around". Whether that promise has been fulfilled will depend on viewers' expectations and knowledge of slightly obscure reality TVstars.
Other contestants include David Hasselhoff's ex-wife Pamela Bach, former X Factor contestants Jedward, and Amy Childs, a star of ITV2's unlikely Bafta-winning reality show The Only Way is Essex.
Bercow's inclusion is likely to generate the most headlines. The wife of John Bercow, she has already demonstrated a knack for generating publicity, posing for a magazine photograph wearing nothing but a bedsheet. She later admitted the photograph in theEvening Standard's ES magazine in February made her look a "complete idiot".
It remains to be seen what the programme's producers have in store for the housemates, although it is likely to involve a lot of dressing up.Bercow is not the first Westminster figure to appear on Celebrity Big Brother. George Galloway appeared on the series in 2006 when he was an MP, memorably pretending to be a cat licking cream from Rula Lenska's hands and robot dancing in a leotard with Pete Burns.

Hillsborough to draw up law banning sweepstakes cafes
Usually one of the calmer, more-demure Hillsborough County commissioners, Sandy Murman broke out of character Wednesday when a fellow board member suggested delaying an ordinance to shut down internet sweepstakes cafés.
Murman made the motion to ban the cafés, which she described as illegal gambling operations that feature computerized slot machines. The county sheriff's office also supports a ban.
But Commissioner Victor Crist, raising the specter of lawsuits by the café owners, urged caution and suggested the county appoint a work group that included sweepstakes café owners to study the issue.
"I am totally surprised at what's come out of your mouth," Murman almost shouted at Crist, who served with her in the Florida Legislature. She pointed out that Crist had served for years on the state Senate Committee on Criminal and Civil Justice Appropriations.
"You can't sit at the table and try to work out a consensus with people that promote illegal gambling," she said.
After long debate, Crist withdrew his motion and the board voted 7-0 to have the county attorney draw up an ordinance banning the cafés. A public hearing on the matter will be held sometime in coming months.

Soaring used-car prices finally start fall -- a little

At the wholesale level, used car prices fell another $300 in June and are now more than $600 below their April peak for the year so far, says Tom Kontos of Adesa's consulting arm. Adesa itself is one of the nation's largest wholesale sellers of used cars.
Even though wholesale used-car prices have tapered off, don't expect the party to last. "Tight used vehicle supplies plus strong retail demand should keep used vehicle prices from dropping dramatically," Kontos writes in a note to the industry.

Add the perfect venue in the State Theatre with its mixture of the quirky with the kitsch, and such a lovely audience, most of whom lived through the years of Beatlemania, and you have a cracking night of nostalgic indulgence

TLC Cancels Kate Plus 8
Humanity took a step in the right direction today, as TLC announced that it will not renew Kate Plus 8 for another season. The show began as Jon & Kate Plus 8 and initially followed Jon and Kate Gosselin, their eight demon-spawn children, and Kate's cavernous uterus as they sought fame and tabloid cover stories. After Jon and Kate's SHOCKING break up in 2009, the show was renamed Kate Plus 8, which still rhymed, thank god. The show is currently in its eighth season. And though it won't see a ninth season, TLC may still order the occasional special to keep us updated on how crazy Kate is and how doomed those poor kids are.

Despite strong performances by all four finalists, head judge Nigel Lythgoe predicted that the winner of So You Think You Can Dance on Thursday night would be one of the two remaining women: Sasha Mallory or Melanie Moore.

The Moon is putting a big wet blanket on this year’s Perseid meteor shower, making it hard to see them. But that’s OK: if you can’t see them, why not listen to them?
Sounds weird, but thanks to SpaceWeatherRadio, now you can! You’re not really hearing sound, of course: meteors burn up in our atmosphere at a height of 100 km or so, too high to directly carry sound waves. But the Air Force has a radar surveillance facility in Texas that beams radio waves into the sky. When a bit of cosmic fluff streaks through our sky, the ionized trail it leaves reflects the radio waves, producing an echo. This radio wave is then translated into sound, so you can effectively hear a meteor! Here’s an example of a Geminid meteor; it sounds like it could’ve been pulled right off the soundtrack for "Forbidden Planet". I had it going for a while and heard several faint but distinct dying "Eeeeeeeoooooooo" sounds from meteors within a few minutes (as well as other sharper sounds I’m not sure I can identify, which makes the whole thing even cooler). The best time to listen for Perseids is after midnight Texas (Central) time, but if you leave it running you’re bound to hear a few of those creepy sounds coming from your speakers.

Mega Millions had a winner of $99 million in its Friday night drawing, but the multi-state Powerball lottery is continuing to rise for Saturday night, currently standing at $180 million, with a cash option value of $100.3 million.
Wednesday night’s drawing was the 10th consecutive one without a jackpot winner being selected.
According to Lottery Post, one ticket sold in Arkansas matched the first five numbers for a $200,000 second-place prize and was purchased with the Power Play option, which multiplied the prize to $1 million. Twelve other tickets won $200,000, none coming from New Jersey.
It costs an extra $1 to purchase a Powerball ticket with the Power Play option. In Power Play, non-jackpot prizes are multiplied anywhere from 2-5 times, depending on a computerized random number generated that evening. Second-place winning Power Play tickets matching five numbers but not the Powerball are always multiplied by 5 times, for a $1 million prize. Wednesday’s Power Play number was 2.

Gavin DeGraw Hospitalized After Assault
Singer Gavin DeGraw was assaulted early Monday in New York City and taken by ambulance to the emergency room.
DeGraw, 34, whose hits include "I Don't Want to Be" and "Not Over You," was in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital with a broken nose and cuts to his face, say police.
The assault took place at about 4:30 a.m. in Manhattan, police say. The New York Post reports he was out with friends when he was attacked by a "pack of thugs" on the street and then hit by a taxi as he stumbled away.(gavin degraw)
His reps say in a statement: "Gavin DeGraw was assaulted ... and was taken to the emergency room at Bellevue Hospital by ambulance. He is currently under observation. We have no additional information at this time."
