T. PAUL - With six days until NHL free agency opens, the market continues to take shape, and it appears that the Rangers remain at the head of the pack chasing Brad Richards.
A source told the Daily News before Friday night's first round of the NHL draft that it is unlikely the Lightning will be able to afford its former star center, even if Tampa Bay is the one place he might be willing to play for a discount. Meanwhile, Flyers chairman Ed Snider told CSNPhilly.com not to expect any more major moves from his team.
The Flyers, who on Thursday signed goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov to a nine-year deal and traded Mike Richards to the Kings and Jeff Carter to the Blue Jackets, would have to free up cap space to make a run at Brad Richards.(ny, nyt)
The News has learned that Philadelphia would listen to offers for $3.08 million winger Kris Versteeg, and either goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky or Michael Leighton likely will be sent packing. Still, as Snider said in his interview with CSN, Philadelphia would also like to re-sign winger Ville Leino, a pending unrestricted free agent. A source told The News that while nothing is imminent, Leino and the Flyers are not far apart, and a deal worth around $3.7 million per year is likely.
