Jackson, a 17-year NBA player and current TV analyst with no head-coaching experience, was hired Monday as the Warriors' third head coach in three seasons.
Jackson, 46, becomes the 24th coach in franchise history and the 19th since the team moved to the West Coast in 1962. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not announced.
"He epitomized leadership as a player in this league ... and we think that characteristic, and many other positive traits, will translate very well into his coaching duties with our young team," co-owner Joe Lacob said in a news release. "We're convinced that he is the right person to guide this team into the future and help us achieve the success that we are striving for as an organization."
A league source said the Warriors have agreed to a three-year deal with New Orleans assistant coach Mike Malone to be Jackson's top assistant. Malone was one of several candidates Lacob interviewed for the head-coaching job and is expected to complement Jackson with his knowledge of X's and O's.
Jackson, a Brooklyn native, played for seven teams, getting to the playoffs in 14 of his 17 seasons. He ranks third on the NBA's all-time assists list, trailing John Stockton and Jason Kidd.
