Papalii salute: new Raiders star harder to stop than a wombat

FIRST-YEAR player Josh Papalii has been described as a ''wombat'' by teammate Tom Learoyd-Lahrs - in the nicest possible way.

Papalii, who is credited with triggering Canberra's remarkable comeback against Brisbane on Sunday from 24-0 down only to lose in golden-point extra time, scored back-to-back tries, sparking the Raiders' points spree.

Unfortunately for Canberra, Peter Wallace fired over a field goal to keep the Raiders rooted to the bottom of the NRL ladder.(wombat)

When you see a young bloke doing it, it spurs the team on - he was definitely a big part of that comeback,'' Learoyd-Lahrs said. ''I'm glad I'm playing alongside him. He's like a bloody wombat - you just can't knock him off balance, and he just keeps his legs pumping. I don't think I've ever seen a bloke his age so developed and so strong. He hasn't been in the system overly long. It takes a lot of players years to get to where he is now with his football.
